Unai sushi at Sushi Hotaru, CBD

Sushi Hotaru, Town Hall

My romantic life is exactly like a sushi train.

You know how some of the less popular sushi trains often have delightful morsels situated on their trains for a tad longer than the stores that see more human traffic? After a while, the old plates that have been circulating on the train became more and more appealing just because you’re hungry. At first you see them as pieces of unwanted morsels, but as you sit there longer and longer they start becoming more and more attractive.

Maybe the fact that they had been sitting there added another level of flavour?

Maybe the reason that dish was still there was because it was a not a bad taste but an acquired one?

Maybe there’s just something wrong with me and that I should just try it, what’s the worst that could happen?

Oh, I went to Sushi Hotaru in Town Hall today.

It was awesome.

Yes, I decided to follow in the footsteps of Bite Me Show Me again this week. Mostly because she wrote such a great review on it and also because I’ve been sitting on that sushi/romantic life analogy for a really long time and I wanted to use it.

Sushi Hotaru is located within the Galeries right underneath one of my favourite ramen places in the city. It’s a pretty sweet location and all sushi on display (except ones placed on gold plates) are $3. They also offer touch screens that let you order what you want if you don’t like sitting there and watching dishes pass you by. I love the experience of being able to pick a plate off of the train but I couldn’t resist playing with the touch screen.

I’m a big sushi fan and my personal record is 17 plates in one sitting. I didn’t get close to that amount today but I just thought I’d let you guys know what I’m capable of when I’m not on a diet and in a ravenous mood.

I started off with an old favourite:

Soft shell crab roll with lotus chip

I grabbed this plate within 2 seconds of sitting down. I’m a big fan of soft shell crab and to have a whole one embedded within my three pieces of sushi for $3 is my idea of food heaven. The sauce was a nice touch and I really enjoyed the fact that my soft shell crab had a bit of crunch to it.

Seared scallops

I love watching sushi chefs implement their mini blow torches. It’s like all sushi chefs have their own personal fire type Pokémon ready to add some sizzle to the nigri.

This was a flawless example of the way scallops can be enjoyed on sushi. Man, I love sushi.

I snatched this up as it passed me by and I could sense the person next to me sighing slightly.

You’ve got to be fast at sushi trains.

They’re not going to break down in the middle of nowhere and leave you waiting like City Rail.

Heh.

Eel with cream cheese

Eel sushi is my favourite. Whoever figured out that cream cheese and eel are best friends deserves whatever they want in life. My two eel topped morsels were quite large and topped with deep fried crisps. I ate these two so fast that the flavours barely registered. When they did, it felt like I was receiving a tongue massage from the finest foods the ocean and dairy Gods could offer.

Oh my, so good.

Fried Shrimp

I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure that my fried shrimp sushi was topped with some namban sauce that I’ve always been partial too. At this point, you can tell that I had thrown any reservations about my dietary restrictions out the window and completely gave in to my taste buds’ desire. They’ve been so deprived as of late and I felt they deserved a reward.

Well, multiple rewards.

Wagyu beef hand roll

The hand rolls are $3 as well.

The hand rolls are $3 as well.

The hand rolls are $3 as well.

The seaweed was unbelievably fresh and made a sound as I crunched into it. The wagyu beef didn’t have the melt in your mouth component that defines great wagyu but it was still incredibly delicious.

Here’s the TL; DR for everyone who just wanted to look at pictures

– Everything here is $3 including some side dishes. Ignore the gold plates and go nuts!

– You can’t go wrong with sushi

– There may be cheaper places, but nowhere else combines this low of a price with such a high standard of excellence.
