Five Guys, Sydney

*** Insert amazing introduction here,

Isaac please update this when you get the chance as this is FIVE GUYS. I know it’s not Shake Shack, but God damn, please take this seriously because this is President Obama’s favourite burger spot so please write something witty, personable and in your signature style that doesn’t seem like you’ve had a 6 month break from writing.

Thanks – Past Isaac

The diner setting that is a common denominator across all Five Guys restaurants

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, arguably one of the most popular of all American burger chains has been slowly expanding their empire with their first Australian restaurant in Penrith and now have one nestled away (behind a McDonald’s nonetheless) in the heart of Sydney’s CBD.

The gang is all here too, the signature red and white setting harking back to diners of yesteryear, the overflowing and delicious fries, the shakes thicker than that one kid who simply didn’t understand long division (I was that kid) and all of the customisation options you could want.

A “small” order of Cajun fries (Cajun is 100% the way to go if you like flavour)

One of the key differentiators between Five Guys and say a fast food spot is that everything is made to order. They don’t start frying your fries until that order is registered so there’s a bit of a wait (before eating something that will definitely add to your weight).

A glorious Five Guys Cheeseburger with almost all of the toppings (I opted for mayo, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, ketchup, mustard, relish and jalapenos).

The last time I had Five Guys, I was 20 years old and I had just visited the diner that Seinfeld used to film at and was fiending for a burger afterwards. I remember being overwhelmed with choice once I hit Five Guys (basically the opposite of my dating prospects)

Fast forward a decade an I am better prepared than ever. I knew my matchup, I knew my options and I was pretty sure I knew what I wanted.

The Five Guys cheeseburger all the way (aka almost all of the available toppings and recommended sauce combo) is the quintessential American burger. Bunch of textures (gooey, crispy, soft), some different flavour profiles (salty, sweet, sour) all working in harmony.

I thought this was the most optimal way to have Five Guys…until I had the Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger:

The Five Guys Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger (All the way, sans grilled mushrooms)

Take my previous paragraph about perfect harmony, textures and flavour profiles but melt the cheese a bit more for an extra bit of gooey deliciousness and butter those buns and invert them (the ingenuity of this move) and also slash some dollars off the overall price and you have this handheld piece of innovation perfection.

THIS is easily the most optimal way of having Five Guys, there’s a reason it’s taken over my TikTok (and not because I spend my evenings looking up burger hacks like I’m searching frantically for the meaning of life).

Here’s the TL;DR for everyone who was thinking I’d sneak in a joke about when five guys walk into a bar…

  • Grilled Cheese Cheeseburger. This is the way.
  • Cajun fries (a small or regular will do, the team will always overfill your cup and ensure you’re having a merry Fry-day).
