There were a lot of things I missed out on growing up in a Chinese household.
I never celebrated Christmas with my family or Easter or Thanksgiving. Hell, we never even gathered everyone around the television set to watch the annual Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show. I missed out on years of Adriana Lima, Miranda Kerr and Rosie Huntington-Whitely strutting their stuff.
Also, in terms of food it was either rice or noodles. I didn’t try pasta until I was a full grown man, I didn’t have sushi until I stole a cooked tuna roll from my sister, I didn’t have a Sunday roast until I was on a cruise ship towards New Caledonia.
I wasn’t going to miss out on future roasts; which is why I went to Roastville in Marrickville with the pre-eminent Michael from I’m Still Hungry.
Located in a converted warehouse; Roastville is lighting up the competition with an Asian-inspired menu featuring kim chi, bulgogi and fried chicken along with classic breakfast dishes.
Allow me to dish out the details now with some input from my buddy, Michael:
I’m at my best in the mornings. I’m full of energy, haven’t had the chance to screw something up yet (most of the time) and the endless possibilities that a full day ahead of me contains just excites me.
I am aware that not everyone feels that way first thing in the morning. Most people’s fuel of choice is coffee but if you ever want to spice it up, why not opt for the chilli infused mushroom bruchetta. It’s not as hot as say Megan Fox in the first Transformers but it’s enough for you to ask for an extra glass of water. The accompanying egg was quite nice and the chilli seeped into the yolk giving it a nice kick Hitmonlee would be proud of.
There are four huge slices of mushroom on top but I wouldn’t have minded some more. Am I asking for too mush?
There was so much green that I thought I had accidentally stumbled into a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle dress-up party.
There was so much green that I thought I was the sixth Power Ranger.
There was so much green that I thought I was at a hippy house party.
There was so much green that I thought I had accidentally gone swimming in one of Cre Asion‘s matcha lattes
There was so much green that I thought I had stumbled upon to a farmer’s market that no one has ever heard of.
The point I’m trying to make is that….god damn, there was a lot of greenery.
Salad and I aren’t the greatest of friends but I still try to check in on the old chap every once in a while. Ordering this dish was my way to make up for a lot of lost time. As much as I loved the produce, my favourite component of this dish were the eggs. Poached beautifully at 65 degrees Celsius, they just started oozing with a gentle prod and spreading their flavours to the vegetables.
Not saying that’s the only way I’d eat vegetables…but err, it helps.
Michael only gave me a small bite of this as he claimed to be extremely hungry. The chicken fillet was breaded very well and quite crunchy. I’m going to let Michael talk about this dish in depth:
Michael: Talking about this dish is easy. It was way too good to share…so I didn’t.
Well then…let’s just move on.
Oh this is not a drill. This is for real.
This is definitely one of the most unique fusion dishes I’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling. Think of it like a fried chicken pizza with an incredibly soft waffle as the pizza base.
I have to linger on the waffle for a bit. This isn’t a cookie cutter waffle (mmm cookie). It’s very doughy with texture reminiscent of a pillow. It’s quite a stark contrast from the crunchy chicken but I’m assuming the contrast is deliberate.
All in all, I learned a lesson from it dough. You never see kim-chi coming, you just get to see it go.
…down I’m Still Hungry’s throat.
I need friends that eat less.
Here’s the TL;DR for all the readers of my next post who are going to be really disappointed that I go back to using my own photos:
– Real talk, I will swing by your house for Sunday roast. Please send me an invitation so it isn’t super creepy when I rock up.
– I just want to go on holiday, rent a ville-a and spend all day talking to you.
– I’d be g-roast out by anyone who didn’t enjoy the food from Roastville
