Sandwich at Excelsior Jones, Ashfield

Excelsior Jones, Ashfield

One of the best parts about my recent foray into the world of food blogging is that all of my friends now lob suggestions at me. My list of places I want to visit mirrors the daily routine of a mail man. This means that the odds of me closing up the shop due to lack of restaurants to sample are as close to zero as you can possibly get.

I wish I could tell you that there was a method as to which place I choose to visit on any given day but I really let my stomach decide what he wants and just roll with it.

Yesterday, my stomach decided to roll on over to Ashfield for some brunch at Excelsior Jones.

I’m usually on time for parties (yep, I’m that guy) but I’m really late to this one.

One of the friends I went to Stitch Bar with actually urged me to check out this humble little cafe off the main road of Ashfield. She suggested I try the lime and coconut milkshake. One problem; I’m not a fan of coconut and I had completely forgotten what she had recommended for lunch.

Oops.

(By the way, doesn’t Excelsior Jones sound like a spell out of the Harry Potter universe? Just me? Ok then).

With no insider knowledge, I opted for a chocolate malted milkshake as my beverage of choice.

The milkshake may not look like much but it definitely brought me into the yard. It was bursting with chocolate flavour and the consistency of the shake was fantastic.  The fact that it was ice cold on a ridiculously hot and windy day definitely solidified its case as a top tier milkshake.

Now for my completely uninformed lunch choice that reminded me of every single HSC question I attempted to answer five years ago

Roast pork sandwich

Thankfully, the roast pork sandwich came out a lot better than my Ancient History essay on Hatshepsut. The roast pork was extremely tender and reminded me of an optimised version of the white pork one finds in Vietnamese pork rolls. The key with any sandwich is finding multiple textures that go well together and the combination of Swiss cheese and crisp lettuce filled that role. The bread was also nicely toasted and was definitely not Helga’s (not that Helga’s is bad, I just like making jokes).

The sandwich was also quite big and I didn’t need to order anything to silence my now dormant stomach.

Here’s the TL; DR for people who are tired of my recycled punch lines:

– Ancient History does not scale well

– Their milkshake can bring all the boys to the yard and damn right, it’s better than yours.

– Roast pork sandwich is a great snack or a full meal for people that possess an old man’s appetite
