My favourite part of my daily routine is the walk from Central station to the office.
Every day I see the same faces during my route. The blonde woman who’s always late, the Asian couple in constant relationship flux (they walk on opposite sides of the path if they’ve fought the night before and walk arm in arm after making up the following night), the dude in the crispy blue suit and the extremely cute Korean girl I feel like I’ve met before.
I tend to focus on the people I see but I also walk past a gamut of cafes and restaurants that I’m yet to try.
The most notable one?
Devon Cafe in Surry Hills.
Devon Cafe has established itself as one of Sydney’s favourite cafes with a myriad of awards from the Good Food Guide, the Sydney Morning Herald and from every foodie with an Instagram account.
Knowing this, I planned to get there at 9 to avoid the line.
I arrived at 10 (whoops) and there was already a line stretching out the door. I was really confused. I haven’t seen that many people in one place since I lined up for the release of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
Fortunately, this gave me some time to break down the menu as I had forgotten to do my homework my dog had eaten my homework.
Much like my math homework in the past, I struggled to select the right answer. There were just so many things I wanted to try.
So instead of picking what I wanted to eat, I just picked a good looking drink to start off with.
Confession: I saw an extremely attractive girl sipping on this when I was waiting in line. Since I knew I’d never have her, I settled for ordering the exact same drink. It’s almost like I got her number except I didn’t get her number.
The drink was very refreshing and almost makes up for the my criminally poor fruit intake. The consistency coming from the pyjama-less bananas and mixed berries was berry nice. Also, the subtle sweetness of the honey and the aesthetic splash it added to the drink was definitely a great under the radar move.
I don’t want to cause a kerfuffle but the amount of truffles on this toasite made me shuffle. God damn, I was ruffled.
This dish just looks regal. My dining companion was just blown away by how beautiful it was plated. This was hardcore food porn happening right in front of me. I’m so glad I’m over 18, I would’ve had to lie about my age back in the day to enjoy this culinary display.
A lot of my favourite things in the world were all on the plate at once.
Mushrooms are my paramour; eggs understand me; I’m pretty much made of cheese and then you throw truffles in the mix with some buttery sourdough to support it all? Ridiculous.
One of the things my friends prefaced me with prior to my visit was how well Devon did eggs. I went in with expectations higher than Everest and Devon scaled those expectations with ease.
The ultimate toastie was the ultimate breakfast.
This might be the most photogenic dish I’ve ever had the pleasure of photographing. It was so gorgeous that I actually thought it was a mirror at one point.
Note: My dining companion saw the option to pimp her eggs with some truffles and chose to do so. That’s the classier version of “would you like fries with that?” The answer is always yes.
I had a pretty big bite of the dish and I thoroughly enjoyed it. The softness of the blini took me by surprise as I was expecting something crispy. It was like a fluffy pancake with some premium salmon, egg and broccolini resting on top. I thought the caviar was really fishy and a little overwhelming but saying caviar tastes fishy is like saying water is wet.
My dining companion enjoyed all the individual components of the dish. Once again, the eggs were poached to perfection and Devon’s reputation for salmon precedes itself. However, she said they didn’t blend together extremely well. Tasty but the synchronisation was a little off.
Mirrors me perfectly, I look good but then you realise I still live at home and collect old movie tickets.
Here’s the TL;DR for everyone who used to do other people’s homework for them:
– I’ll be back for the Korean fried chicken burger, Breakfast with the Sakumas, the French toast etc
– Everyday I’m trufflin’
– When I first saw the menu, I thought the eggs blini was listed as ‘eggs bikini.’ Mmm I’d love to poach them off a few shielas if you know what I mean.
