Ramen at Ippudo, CBD

Ippudo Sydney, CBD

Friend: It’s better than Ippudo!

Isaac: Really?

Friend: You have to go.

Isaac: Alright then

It’s not that I didn’t believe my friend it’s just that I had to refresh my memory. You see my taste buds don’t retain flavours the way my mind retains Eminem lyrics. No, I definitely needed to go back to one of my favourite ramen restaurants to make sure that every proceeding place had a benchmark to compare to.

So there they go, back to Ippudo where Isaac can spit his flow.

The magic of food is that a moment can be recreated. That can’t be done in any other aspect of life.

Do you remember your first kiss? I do. It was in a game of truth or dare and it was with a girl I didn’t really like. There were half a dozen pre-pubescents watching me as I closed my eyes at the last second. Is it possible to ever recreate that moment (not that I would want to) without the use of a time machine? Nope.

With food it’s possible. Maybe the cut of pork is slightly different and the broth is a little hotter than previously, but the feeling and the chemical reaction within your mind and body is identical.

Um, the aim of that elongated tangent was to inform you that I much preferred the first time I had a pork bun from Ippudo to my first kiss.

My first kiss was very dry which is completely different from Ippudo’s pork bun. It’s soft and tender bun serves as a pillow where the juicy pork lies in with its best lettuce and Japanese mayonnaise buddies. The pork is very tasty and Japanese mayonnaise will never be criticised on this blog. I would love a larger burger version of this but nothing’s stopping me from ordering a dozen of these and eating them all in one sitting.

I personally think that this is the best bun I’ve ever had. In fairness, there are a plethora of buns for me to try and that excitement keeps me up at night.

Next up, a classic ramen accomplice:

Pan fried gyoza
Pan fried gyoza

First impression was that they were incredibly tiny. They were the dumpling version of that minuscule dog Paris Hilton used to keep in her purse.

However, it’s not the size that matters but the taste. They were fried well with crisp bases and the mince within was very tasty. The top of the gyoza was soft and sinking your teeth into a bite size offering was something that could be put on loop and keep you happy for days on end.

However, I’ve mentioned this before but I’m so accustomed to having soup filled dumplings whenever I eat out that I can’t help but feel disappointed when I have a serving that is without soup.

Now on to the star attraction:

Tan Tan Men (Seasonal)
Tan Tan Men (Seasonal)

I always try something new every time I go somewhere familiar (minus the pork buns because you know) so here’s what I opted for today. It was a seasonal special and a lot spicier than anything else on Ippudo’s menu. The noodles were a bit bland but the broth was excellent and one of the main reasons that Ippudo has such a stellar reputation. The broth is meticulously prepared and takes hours to get just right. The evidence is in every spoonful.

There weren’t a tonne of toppings in my bowl and only two slices of pork but I was already reeling from my pork bun and gyoza.

Here’s the TL; DR for everyone who just wanted to read about my first kiss:

– The Marshall Mathers LP 2 is awesome

– Ippudo pork buns are a must have. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Morning, noon or night. Blonde, black or brunette.

– Gyoza is good but I need soup.

– Broth is the foundation of great ramen and nobody does great broth like Ippudo.

      1. I’d love to try them! So sad that they are only in New York within the US. I wish they’d open up a branch in Los Angeles, so I could go!

  1. I love their buns and their akaramaru shinaji – i think that is what is called. The one with the garlic oil and i love their eggs.
p.s.. my first kiss was horrible too. Was at a school dance, got absolutely mauled and the dishwasher cycle came on Ugghhh… I liked him tho and gave him another shot! At least he redeemed himself more than once haha
