You always remember your first.

My first kiss consisted of a truth or dare game with a girl that no one liked.

My first car was a beat up, black BMW that I never actually ended up driving (I bought it before I actually got my license, I used the car as a glorified CD player.).

My first meal in LA? Well it was a double double at In N Out in Westchester, Los Angeles!

Back story, I was jetlagged and exhausted after an incredibly taxing day at Universal Studios (as fatigued as you can be from walking all day, riding rollercoasters and sidestepping kids holding fairy floss the size of a small Christmas tree). I had slept for a total of 25 minutes over 2 days and had yet to eat.

Almost anything I consumed would’ve tasted like making out with Miranda Kerr as all the kids who used to call me misshapen looked on in pure jealousy.

I’ve heard so much about In n Out that I was extremely keen to sink my teeth in.

Spoiler alert: I didn’t want to take my teeth out.

A little more back story before we start talking about the food. We were actually on board of a shuttle bus and the driver’s job was to drive around picking up passengers from various hotels in LA. We persuaded him (ok, we bribed him) to take us to In n Out instead. Don’t you ever question the beast I become when it comes to burgers.

Speaking of beasts, here are some fries animal style:

The toppings (I’m not sure why it’s referred to as animal style. In fairness, I did resemble a savage when these were presented so maybe you become the animal) on the fries were fantastic. The weirdly limp fries served as a means to an end which involved mustard, cheese and onions all in and around my mouth.

I’ve heard a lot of tales about how the fries at In n Out are surprisingly subpar. One of the most popular conspiracy theories I’ve heard is that the chips are DELIBERATELY bad so that the burgers seem so much better in comparison. Ok, I may have just made that one up but still.

Before we get to the meat and potatoes of this review (I am aware that I just discussed the potatoes…please just let me use the phrase), let’s talk about some milkshakes shall we?

Made with rich ice cream, these thickshakes are one of the reasons that my thighs now jiggle whenever I manoeuvre around the house. You know how some places claim to make thickshakes and instead you’re given something that’s more liquid than money? Well, this shake was thicker than Crabbe and Goyle and way more delicious.

I remembered way after the fact that I could’ve combined all three flavours on offer (chocolate was the third) and formed a Neapolitan thickshake of the Gods. I will now light myself on fire.

The buns are very different from what I’m accustomed to back home. They were toasted on the inside and flaky on the outside. They didn’t turn to mush even though they were playing host to double patties, double cheese and a gauntlet of other killer burger ingredients. The salad ingredients were incredibly fresh and I half expected to see a farmer harvesting crops in the back.

There wasn’t one but still. I think the synergy between all the ingredients was top notch and I demolished the burger like it was a dude trying to steal the last shirt in my size at a Boxing Day sale.

Thing is, I was still hungry (shout outs to Michael).

So I had to have seconds:

Even though the components are mostly the same, this burger was really different to its beefier brother. The presence of two mammoth slices of onion put me off slightly but I still bit into it like I was a wild mongrel. The salad to patty ratio was sadly skewed towards Team Salad but I still enjoyed it immensely.

I should probably talk about the patty some more. It’s grilled medium/well-done and its signature charred crust is what makes guys like me board a 13 hours flight to sample it. I didn’t go to LA JUST for In N Out….but I’m not going to lie and say it wasn’t a huge factor in my decision.

In N Out was one of the main reasons I went to LA and is one of the main reasons I’ll be back.

Here’s the TL;DR for everyone with an innie or an outie:

– Animal style is the way to go with chips, burgers and in the bedroom.

– I like my drinks (thick)shaken not stirred

– Always go for seconds on vacation.
