Paper Plane Cafe, Parramatta

I will never forget my first experience on a plane

It was for a family trip to Queensland, I was 11 years old and not sure what to expect. I had always wanted to fly but I imagined doing it with a red cape on my back and not cramped up in a tiny space with a fat dude sleep talking about greyhounds sitting next to me.

Then the plane took off and my ears started popping like bubble wrap. It was super planeful (heh) and the disorientation I felt was something I had never experienced before.

Forutnately, my first experience at Paper Plane wasn’t like that at all:

Highly recommended by a number of my most trusted sources, I decided to venture out west to try a cafe flying high on its fantastic word of mouth reputation. With a vast menu containing fresh takes on breakfast classics (as well as some kooky lunch combos), I couldn’t wait to get on board the paper plane plane-wagon.

Let’s go Black Eyed Peas for a second and get it started:

paper plane cafe big brekkie
The BIG Brekkie: Sunny side up eggs, bacon, chorizo, hash brown, sauteed mushrroms, tomatoes, rocket and sourdough bread

I was a feeling a tad peckish so I thought I’d start the day with something light. And by light I mean something that can light up the god damn room with its sheer awesomeness. You know what starting my day with this big breakfast board reminded me of?

The opening scenes from the Fast and Furious franchise. They have a tendency to start the movies with a ridiculously over the top action sequence that sets the tone for the rest of the movie.

Yup.

I went with something ridiculously over the top that would set the tone for the rest of the day (spoiler alert: I was in bed by 2:30pm suffering from the symptoms of waytoomuchfooditis).

As you can see, there was a lot going on so let me get you on board like the breakfast. I absolutely love rocket and was very happy to see it in the middle of the board. It did a fine job balancing out the heartiness of everything else on offer. The stand out items for me were the chorizo (full of flavour and a generous amount), the eggs (had a nice crispy edge and the peppery yolk and the hash brown (crunchy coating with soft potato on the inside).

Definitely won’t get board of eating this all the time.

I’d definitely get fat, but I wouldn’t be bored.

The Tiny Dancer was Jennybeaans‘ (my adopted niece) first choice. The dish is incredibly photogenic and the lack of fried stuff even managed to make it seem healthy. In fairness, anything would look healthy next to my monstrous board of artery cloggers. It’s like how even someone as big and bulky as Vin Diesel looks like a normal sized dude next to the human boulder known as the Rock in the Fast and Furious franchise (yep, I’m going to be referencing the movies a lot. Try and keep up).

Just like with my board, I really enjoyed everything green. The asparagus, avocado and spinach all hit the spot for me. The salmon was a tad fishy for me so I wasn’t completely enamoured by this serving.

That’s ok, I’ve been told many times that there are plenty of fish in the sea so maybe I’ll get luckier next time.

paper plane cafe pulled pork fries

You’re probably thinking “You had all of this for breakfast? What’s wrong with you.”

Look, concerned reader. I live my life a meal at a time. Nothing else matters. Not the calories, the sodium intake or any other health ramifications. For the duration of that meal, I’m free.

Speaking of, I wish these pulled pork fries were free because I would eat them whenever I could. The pork blended beautifully with the tomato based sauce. The sour cream and avocado also worked incredibly well together. The fries soaked up all these flavours and remained crispy throughout. I do recommend eating this dish as fast and as furiously as possible though as you really don’t want to test how long the fries remain crunchy.

Heh.

paper plane burger
Paper plane burger with a beef patty, peanut butter, bacon, lettuce, tomato on a brioche bun

Pretty standard ingredient list huh? Beef, lettuce, tomato, peanut butter, bac-WAIT, HOLD UP?

Peanut butter?

That’s more random than the time when Vin Diesel temporarily morphed into Batman and figured out exactly how Letty died in Fast & Furious simply by staring at treadmarks on the road.

However, this burger (just like everything in F&F) worked amazingly even though it had no right to on paper. There was a lot of synergy between the mustard and peanut butter. I have to give a special shout out to the brioche bun for housing everything beautifully. Oh and the charring on the patty was delicious.

French toast with fresh strawberries and strawberry jam

I know the French toast looks like something out of a sugar addict’s dreams but it’s nowhere near as sweet as it looks. It drew most of its flavour from the fresh strawberries and jam. Very tangy and the nice mixup of textures with the nuts made it a great way to cap off my breakfast….just like the final scene of the lastest Fast and Furious movie.

I can’t wait to tell you about my next meal when I see you again.

Here’s the TL;DR of everyone who thought I was going to sneak in a reference to the plane scene in Fast Six.

– I was going to but it didn’t quite take off (heh)

– Please go to Paper Plane early because it gets packed rather quickly. Also, go with a group so you can sample as much of the menu as possible. I’m already planning second visit because there was just so many other options that sounded incredible.

– You can say a lot about the food at Paper Plane, but you can’t ever say that it’s lacking flavour or just….plane. Heh.
