left of field rhodes cafe

Left of Field, Rhodes

After getting rejected left, right and centre; I decided to take a break from girls for a while.

I think the tipping point was when a girl told me nothing was ever going to happen even though I had never asked her out. I thought that was a bit harsh and went home to cry over a tub of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream.

So I gave up and decided to focus on me, my career and all of those other things sad people say when they can’t get a date.

Why would I play the field when I was always the last one on the field?

Oh well, just like my sudden change of luck on the field, I’ve found a new cafe called Left of Field and I feel just as lucky.

Rhodes’s newest cafe, Left of Field is already making a name for itself with unique cafe offerings incorporating Asian elements and using top-notch local produce. Almost everything served at Left of Field is made from scratch and in-house where as everything I make at home scratches me and gets thrown out of the house.

Filled with natural light and a gorgeous minimalistic look, I wondered if it had the filling that mattered most.

Does it have great food or will it be left of-f my list of cafes to return to?

Let’s find out:

left of field pork schnitzel burger
Pork burger with pig cheek schnitzel, kimchi slaw, fried egg and mayo served with crispy pig ear fries

This burger was the first of our dishes to be brought ou and I went from composed 25 year old food blogger to ravenous pig in a heartbeat.

Does this mean I’m a cannibal?

The pork schnitzel was delightfully crunchy with the cheek’s mixed texture coated in a delicious breadcrumb coating. Speaking of coating, I like how the runny yolk of the fried egg provided my schnitzel with a creamy yellow autumn coat of fat.

What’s crazy is that the burger wasn’t even the best thing on the plate. The accompanying pig ear fries were cruncy and chewy; two qualities I never knew I wanted in the one set of fries.

Definitely something worth pigging out on.

Yes, yes I did visit Left of Field on a Fry-Day, why do you ask?

I wanted some extra fries and received a small boatload sprinkled with fragrant pecorino cheese and truffle oil. Crunchy, addictive and tasty: Left of Field might have the strongest duo of chips I’ve seen since the time I got super hot in Vegas and had two thousand dollar chips side by side.

I totally made that up, the max I spent per hand of Blackjack was like $20 and I won about enough for a couple of visits to Shake Shack.

I’m not a high roller, I’m just gaining weight rapidly so I can roll down mountains quickly.

Let’s move on.

left of field ocean trout
Gin and juniper cured ocean trout on grilled rye, poached egg, fennel salad and yuzu foam

There are plenty of fish in the sea, but all I want is the cured ocean trout at Left of Field with its yuzu foam.

The cured nature of the trout completely eliminates any fishy taste that would normally be present. Additionally, the citrus kick offered by the yuzu foam was something I never knew ocean trout needed. Its like for all folks in their mid 20s who don’t realise they need health insurance until they need to get their wisdom teeth out; it’s really quite handy.

left of field hotcakes
Hotcakes with caramelised banana, earl grey custard and maple popcorn

On a day where I enjoyed an amazing burger, crunchy pig ear fries and delectable ocean trout, this was my absolute favourite breakfast dish.

Buttery, fluffy and with an almost scone-like texture; these were amongst the finest hotcakes I’ve ever had the pleasure of devouring. I was a big fan of the fresh berries, the smushed banana that lived between each layer and the earl grey custard was ingenius.

I’m going to love these hotcakes until I’m earl and grey.

Here’s the TL;DR for everyone who knows exactly how I field:

– Every-day is a Good Fry-Day at Left of Field.

– Please, please, get the hotcakes. They’ll cake you so happy.

– No matter how many Rhodes you have to travel across, I assure you, Left of Field is worth the journey.

  1. I see the hotcakes on IG and then I see them again on this post. Bad mistake.

Also, the interior – HOW MUCH DOES IT REMIND YOU OF THE KETTLE BLACK EH?

  2. The ocean trout for me, thanks. And forget the ladies who weren’t keen – the foodette gal of your dreams is bound to cross paths with you when you least expect it. Cliche but true.
