Buttermelt Cafe, Strathfield

I have a black v-neck sweater that’s perfect for all occasions. It’s my go-to garment for work, dates and even when I need to settle a score on the basketball court. I’ve kicked many an ass with my blue button up underneath my go-to sweater.

Spoiler alert: Buttermelt Cafe is the dining equivalent of my black sweater. Super reliable for quality food and drink for all occasions.

Let’s take a look at what this garment; sh*t, I meant cafe has to offer:

Buttermelt Cafe

Located where Moochi used to be (RIP frozen yogurt craze of 2012), Buttermelt fills a hole in Strathfield’s dining scene which is mostly made up of Korean BBQ, Korean BBQ and the occasional Korean BBQ place.

It is open early in the morning and stays open late throughout the night. Its menu shifts between classic breakfast items and a mixture of traditional/fusion dinner items. Oh and there’s also an assortment of awesome desserts but we’ll get to that.

Let’s start with the most important meal of the day that I usually skip, breakfast:

buttermelt-eggs-bennedict (3)
Salmon benedict with two eggs and Hollandaise sauce

There are a lot of ways that salmon benedict can be ruined. The eggs can be over cooked, the bread can be hard, the sauce could be flavourless and the salmon could suddenly sprout arms and throttle you to death.

Fortunately, none of those things were in play when I had breakfast at Buttermelt. As you can see, the eggs were cooked perfectly with gorgeous running yolk that spread its love all over the plate.

Wild Mushroom Bruschetta with sauteed mushooms on organic sourdough, topped with a poached egg and parmesan cheese.

Even if I’m stuffed to the brim and there’s not mush-room left in my stomach, I’ve got space for this dish.

I can’t really find fault in this dish…maybe some more mushrooms would’ve been nice but I say that about every dish I enjoy.

It’s like “whoa Shake Shack, you’re amazing and easily the best I’ve ever had. But can I please have an infinite amount of you?”

Yeah, this incredible insight is why they pay me the big bucks.*

Taro latte
Taro latte

My love for taro is only rivalled by my love for card games, extremely quotable moves (300 and the entire Fast and the Furious franchise rank highly) and girls that laugh at my Pokemon references.

To have it in a warm beverage perfect for winter (and all seasons really) is my idea of heaven. It’s very rich, sweet and perfect as a morning pick me up or as a post dinner treat.

Speaking of, let’s go out to dinner. Sorry, I meant let’s get to dinner.

Coconut Crumb Chicken Salad
Coconut Crumb Chicken Salad

This is a gargantuan salad filled to capacity with rocket, lettuce, tomato, avocado, crumbed chicken and sprinkled with desiccated coconut. The coconut definitely gave the salad a very unique dynamic that I hadn’t really encountered before, it provided the texture of a shaven parmesan but added the sweet essence of coconut to a savoury salad.

Also, the huge slice of avocado was a welcome sight like a bathroom after sitting through a Harry Potter marathon.

Tangent: you know that feeling you get when you really need to use the bathroom, and your desire to relieve yourself increases tenfold as you approach the stall? That’s how I feel about food in a restaurant. I’m usually peckish but I become RAVENOUS after I’ve made my order and I know my food’s on the way.

Let’s move on:

Prawn linguini with chilli tiger prawns, fresh tomato and rocket
Prawn linguini with chilli tiger prawns, fresh tomato and rocket

Easily my favourite dish amongst everything I’ve tried from Buttermelt. Linguine cooked al dente smothered in rich pasta sauce with chunks of fresh tomato, an entire school of prawns and rocket.

God damn, I love rocket. Its the one ingredient that can enhance almost anything with savoury component.

Pizza? Throw some rocket on top of that bad boy.

Fried chicken? Throw some rocket on top of that bad chick.

Rocket? Throw some rocket on top of that and you’ve got yourself double the rocket.

I don’t think I’ve spent enough time talking about the other components. The prawns are bathed in the sauce and it was awesome going through all of them. I lost count after demolishing the first batch (in fairness, I’ve never been good with numbers).

Coconut Blueberry Pancakes with desiccated coconut, blueberries and coconut ice cream

The blueberry pancakes we had on the night were incredibly fluffy and almost bready. I generally prefer my pancakes to be on the thinner side but the thicker take allowed it to remain pretty solid whilst absorbing the generous amount of syrup and ice cream on offer.

Oh I almost forgot, I have a confession to make:

I don’t actually like coconut. It’s one of the reasons I am yet to try a lamington despite being born in Australia.

Why do I bring this up? Well, the ice cream doesn’t have a strong coconut taste to it. I didn’t even notice it was coconut ice cream until I checked the  menu again later. This was a plus for me but it could irk some other people. The ice cream itself was creamy and was a great complement to the pancakes.

Here’s the TL;DR for everyone who wants to kick me out of Australia for being unpatriotic:

– I’ve yearned for a cafe in Strathfield of this nature and quality for so long. Mainly because I’m incredibly lazy….OK entirely because I’m incredibly lazy.

– They stock glazed donuts. Go grab a dozen in the morning and hit me up for a donut party. Do-nut hold out on me.

– The breakfast menu ends at 3 and the lunch/dinner menu starts at 11. There is a glorious 4 hour window in which you can order anything you’d like on the menu.

– Please get the linguine and send me photos.

  1. Yay been seeing this all over IG lately and now there’s finally a blog post about it. The mushroom bruschetta looks like the one I usually get at 3 Williams. Looks pretty yum! Now to drag myself to Strathfield…

  3. What a delicious meal you had, everything looks so appetising. I feel you Isaac, I really don’t like lamingtons, love coconut, chocolate and sponge, but put them all together and I won’t go near it. I can’t explain it…

  4. This cafe seems like an absolute gem! The coconut chicken salad looks super delicious – the added flavour of the coconut shavings sound different and yum
