Merrywell, Southbank

The Merrywell, Southbank

I love travelling. Whether it’s a  twenty hour bus ride to somewhere rural, a leisurely cruise over the seas or a cheap flight to somewhere domestic; I simply enjoy being away from my regular routine for a short period of time. I love meeting new people, experiencing new customs and taking in sights that we just don’t have in Sydney.

Above all, I love having a chance to try new food; which is what I did in Melbourne this past weekend. I’ve been to Melbourne before but that was pre-iFat. There’s been one place I made sure I’d go to before I left the state of Victoria.

That place was the Merrywell in Southbank,

Confession: I wasn’t in Melbourne for a food cruise. I was there for a video game tournament and (please stop laughing) I was there with a bunch of the best Injustice players in the country. We were ravenous as we had caught an early morning flight and had spent a lot of our time wandering the streets of Melbourne waiting for our hotel to allow us to check in

Expectations were sky high and stomachs were at their apex in terms of noise.

I went with the classic Merrywell burger.

I admired this fine specimen for a moment before I picked it up. I had my shades on so that it wouldn’t know I was staring.

I was immediately disappointed in the bottom bun as it resembled a slice of white bread with the crusts cut off. It was not a load bearing bun and the juices from the patty were already reducing the slice of white bread to bread mush.

I got past the mush pretty quickly by simply flipping the burger upside down. The contents of the burger were actually quite good. The patty was nice and juicy and the bacon was very nicely cooked. However, I was a little underwhelmed considering I walked into the Merrywell under the impression that I would be enjoying one of the best burgers in the country. It was good, but I wouldn’t take a state interstate just to sink my teeth into it again.

The fries? Oh the fries would make me consider it.

Very nice, crisp and the salt that shared a paper home with the fries was absolutely top notch. My only complaint about the fries was that there wasn’t enough to last me a lifetime.

Here’s the TL; DR for everyone who just wanted to look at some photos

– I went to Melbourne to play video games

– The Merrywell is a very solid burger joint

– I love fries.

      1. Had chicken and waffles, mac n cheese balls and I can’t remember what else. I didn’t know they did burgers down stairs hahah whoops! When I went huxtaburger wasn’t in the cbd.

  1. Their burgers are alright but yes my preference is huxta! They opened one in the CBD so you don’t have to venture into collingwood, but not sure if opened on weekends
